Bok wonderkid Moodie beams as he 'repays' family with his magic: 'I called home immediately'

Like a coveted soccer striker intent on immediately "paying back" his transfer fee, so purposeful was Canan Moodie in providing a return on investment for his family for years of support and sacrifice.

The 19-year-old winger completed a meteoric rise on Saturday by not only becoming the second youngest player in the professional era to make his Springbok debut, but also cap the occasion with a first try.

A viral clip on social media showcased the pandemonium in the Moodie household in Paarl as a substantial gathering cheered for their young hero and son.

Calling them was also the first thing he did after the whistle had blown for 24-8 Bok victory.

"I called them after the game and they were extremely excited," a beaming Moodie said.

"There was a whole gathering of family and friends. It's such a fulfilling feeling to see them so joyous and to make them proud. They played a huge role in my life and getting me here.

"I want to say thanks for everything to them. It’s special to have 'repaid' them a bit with his performance."

And it was indeed a performance that justified the Bok hierarchy's faith in the youngster.

Various members of team management gleefully commented on Moodie's maturity and work ethic, of which his ability to just do the basics well stands out.

As it turned out, he gave an assured performance, completing all his tackles, trusting Willie le Roux's judgment when falling back, almost setting Jesse Kriel free with a reach-around offload and making the solid carry that led to Makazole Mapimpi's try.

Yet it was THAT try that will surely define what looks to be a phenomenal future legacy.
