Bohemians complete signing of former €13m striker Lys Mousset

Lys Mousset, a former €13 million Premier League player with Sheffield United, has joined Bohemians ahead of the new League of Ireland season.

The 28-year-old has played over 90 games in England's top flight with Bournemouth and Sheffield United.

He moved from the Cherries to the Blades for what was a club record fee in 2019.

The former France at U-21 level had originally headed to England in €7.5m from Le Havre in 2016.

The peak of his career came in 2019-2020 when he scored six Premier League goals for Sheffield United, but his career has derailed in recent years.

A loan spell with then Serie A side Salernitana was followed by a permanent moved to the Bundesliga with Bochum in 2022.

He failed to play a competitive game for the club amid reports the German club were unhappy with his commitment.

A loan spell with French second tier outfit Nimes yielded one goal in 11 matches, with an Achilles injury ending his time at the club in the summer of 2023.

Having failed to play since, Mousset has been with Bohs for the last month and scored in a friendly against Drogheda United.

Speaking to RTÉ Sport at Wednesday's launch of the impending League of Ireland season before Mousset's arrival was confirmed, Bohs boss Alan Reynolds acknowledged that the move is a leap of faith for both club and player given the trajectory of his career in recent times.

"Lys hasn't played in 18 months so there's plenty of working (to be done)," said Reynolds.

"He's an exciting talent. I suppose it will be a risk for him coming to us but also for us to sign him. But he's exciting."

On potential concerns about the manner of Mousset's swift parting of ways with Bochum, Reynolds added: "He seems to have matured a bit and we have spoken about all these things."
