Bobby Madden announces international refereeing retirement as he makes 'time to step aside' statement
Bobby Madden has announced he is stepping down as an international referee.
The whistler from East Kilbride has been officiating UEFA matches abroad since 2010 across a range of competitions.
After a well-journeyed career, Madden is stepping back and his sole focus will be on refereeing at domestic level.
It's set to be a period of change for officials in Scotland as VAR is introduced to the Premiership from the middle of the 2022/23 top flight season.
His final game abroad was a Nations League Group D match between Malta and Estonia, with former Motherwell striker Henri Anier scoring a 94th minute winner during a 2-1 victory for Karel Voolaid's team.
Announcing the move on social media, Madden said: "Finishing off my international career back where it all began.
"Since attending the UEFA entrance course in Malta 2010 I have officiated at 180 matches in 51 different countries, and last night’s match brings this chapter to a close.
"I have experienced far more than I could ever have imagined as a FIFA referee and it’s time to step aside.
"Most importantly, I have met many great friends and colleagues along the way, I wish them all the very best."
