Bobby Guest lands hole-in-one as Walmer & Kingsdown Golf Club lose annual memorial match to The Royal Marines

A golfer landed a hole-in-one when playing at an annual memorial match alongside his son.

Deal’s Bobby Guest, 69, linked up with 43-year-old Michael Guest at Walmer & Kingsdown as invited club members took on The Royal Marines at the annual game played in memory of the 11 Royal Marines Bandsmen killed in an IRA bomb attack on Deal Barracks in 1989.

Guest’s highlight of the day was his ace at the 14th hole.

He said: “It’s not often I get to play with my son. It’s quite rare for me to get a game of golf in with him.

“Mike has only been a member for about five years - he was more elated about it [the hole-in-one] than me!

“When you are on the 14th tee, you cannot see the hole, really. We got up to the green and couldn’t see any of the balls on the green. One was in the bunker and one was over the back.

“Nine times out of 10, my balls go over the back of the green. So I automatically went to the back of the green but couldn’t find it.

“It was not until the others played their shots that we found out. One of them got on the green and said ‘There’s a ball in the hole’ and I looked and said ‘Hold on… That’s mine!’”

Prizes for the nearest the pin and the longest drive had been organised. Guest looked like he would miss out but club-mate John Boyd then intervened.

Guest said: “We had a presentation dinner in the evening.

“They mentioned I got a hole-in-one and he, graciously, gave me his prize.”

The match was, however, won 6-1 by The Marines, Walmer and Kingsdown’s only winning game on September 21 was won by Stan Britain and Roger Blown.

“They were definitely on form on Wednesday,” said Guest, who is a long-serving Walmer & Kingsdown member.

“They mainly come from Portsmouth. It’s a prestigious event for them to play in.
