Blitzboks bounce back from Aussie defeat to beat Hong Kong in Singapore Sevens

The Springbok Sevens bounced back from a 19-0 loss to Australia in their first pool A game by beating Hong Kong China 31-12 in their second match at the National Stadium in Singapore.

The Blitzboks, who started the match rather scratchily, were reduced to six men after Ricardo Duarttee was yellow-carded for an unsafe tackle midway through the first half.

But that did not impede them from finally getting some points in Singapore when Impi Visser scored their first try, not only of this game, but of the Singapore Sevens.

Mfundo Ndhlovu immediately added a second from a neatly-worked lineout, cutting through the tenuous Hong Kong midfield defence to score and open a 14-0 lead.

Ndhlovu wasn’t done and beat five players down the left side to score his second try and the Blitzboks’ third of the match for a comfortable 21-0 half-time lead.

South Africa started the second half like the first, getting Visser sin-binned, and this time Max Denmark scored for their opponents in that time.

But it wasn’t long before Sebastiaan Jobb restored their comfortable lead when he used his pace to finish down the left.

Having conceded 19 points without reply in their first game against Australia, the Blitzboks needed to chase a huge scoreline to get themselves in the playoff picture. Ethan James obliged and scored their fifth try.

But Hong Kong drew a try back through Liam Herbert for a 31-12 finish.
