Blairgowrie golfer Connor Graham set to continue memorable year at World Amateur Team Championship

Connor Graham is looking to emulate the Eisenhower Trophy achievements of former Perthshire golfers Wallace Booth and Gavin Dear.

Wallace from Comrie and Gavin, who hails from Scone, won the World Amateur Team Championships back in 2008 alongside Callum Macaulay.

Now 16-year-old Connor, a rising star of the sport, is set to represent Scotland and tee-up in the same event at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club from October 18-21.

The Blairgowrie member is in the Scots’ team alongside Calum Scott (Nairn) and Gregor Tait (Aldeburgh).

Referring to Wallace and Gavin’s 2008 win, Connor said: “It was amazing for them and it would be pretty cool and special to follow that up and get a win.”

Connor has spent plenty of time with his team-mates this year and added: “I know Calum and Gregor well and we have a strong team. We’ll just be looking to go over there and perform well.

“I don’t know too much about the course but I’ve seen it on the TV because the DP World Tour event gets played there.”

Connor heads for the Middle East on the back of competing in – and winning – the Junior Ryder Cup with Team Europe against USA in Rome.

It was an unforgettable experience for the Blairgowrie High student which had started with a remarkable recovery in the opening day foursomes.

Partnering Ireland’s Sean Keeling, they were six down at the turn but ended up getting a half.

“It definitely felt like a win,” Connor laughed. “I don’t think I’d ever been six down before.

“We played some of the best golf of our lives on the back nine. To come back from six down through nine was pretty incredible.

“We were actually all square through 17 and thought we had a chance to win. It gave us a boost for the matches that were to come.”
