Blackpool singer diagnosed with stage four cancer after spotting unusal sign in his teeth

A Meat Loaf tribute act was diagnosed with cancer after spotting a warning sign in his teeth.

The professional performer only noticed the change while watching back a TV interview he had taken part in for the BBC following the star's death in 2022.

While watching himself back, Peter Young, 67, noticed that he had a gap in his teeth. Several months later, a dental visit revealed that the gap was a symptom of stage four mouth cancer.

Peter was diagnosed in December 2022. Now cancer free, he said he believes spotting the unusual sign saved his life.

The Blackpool singer said: "Had Meat Loaf not died, I don’t think I’d be here any more. I wouldn’t have done the interview, and I wouldn’t have known. The likelihood is, I would have been dead."

Peter, who had been performing as Meat Loaf for around 15 years before the star died, admitted he didn't go to the dentist "often enough" and he wouldn't have checked for signs of cancer had he not picked up on the change in the way his teeth looked. "It’s a bit of a lesson for everyone, that," he said.

Recalling finding out that he had cancer, Peter said: "The guy who diagnosed me suggested I wouldn’t be able to sing again. That kind of broke me a bit, that. I’ve been doing it for 30 years, it was my living. I was about to retire, but I would never retire from singing."

The singer, who has toured his act around the world, first noticed something was wrong after he was invited on to the BBC to discuss the death of Meat Loaf - real name Marvin Lee Aday - in January 2022.

After noticing the gap in his teeth, Peter decided seven months later that he wanted to get implants to fix the problem. However, at the time, he had no idea that something was seriously wrong.
