Blackpool have to find the right squad balance but that is easier said than done
Blackpool head to Southport on Saturday with a fresh look to their dugout and a Head Coach keen to truly begin his work.
Michael Appleton will take charge of the Seasiders for the first time in his second spell in charge when his side travel to Southport on Saturday and this, as has been the case at both Oxford United and Lincoln City, is where he can lay the foundations of his philosophy for the forthcoming season.
With a hunger to prove the doubters wrong, Appleton has been here before and knows the ropes when it comes to making incremental improvements, without compromising on his fundamental ideals of what his side should look like. While negativity still rumbles around the fanbase in some quarters, it's far simpler for all involved to embrace the excitement of the unknown - after all that is the beauty of the sport.
I am still of the mind that the Seasiders need to strengthen in a number of areas should they wish to kick on next season, with the cracks having started to show in the final weeks of Neil Critchley's tenure in particular. However, there are players in that squad who have a point to prove and have a Head Coach that is willing to give chances to those lacking experience.
That point is key I feel, especially when it comes to the club's exciting youth prospects. Critchley made all the right noises when it came to young players at the club but ultimately their chances were limited as the now-Aston Villa Assistant Head Coach opted to adapt. Of course we have to note we are in the early stages, but history tells you Appleton is more uncompromising in his approach and has made a name from getting the most out of young talents.
Rob Apter in particular is someone I feel is ready to get minutes for Blackpool next
