Blackburn Rovers confirm first summer transfer as Callum Brittain signs from Barnsley

Blackburn Rovers have confirmed Callum Brittain as their first summer signing.

The defender arrives from Barnsley on a permanent contract and marks Jon Dahl Tomasson's first capture as head coach. The right-back fills a natural hole in the squad after the exit of Ryan Nyambe, who has joined Wigan Athletic.

As reported earlier on Wednesday by , Rovers were keen to get the 24-year-old through the door. Brittain has been admired for some time by the club and it's not a major surprise to see they have rekindled their interest.

Brittain leaves Barnsley following their relegation to League One last term after three years at Oakwell. However, he was a huge part of the side that finished fifth and reached the Championship play-off the previous campaign.

Rovers’ Director of Football, Gregg Broughton, said: “We are delighted to welcome Callum to Blackburn Rovers. His profile fits exactly with the playing model we are building at the club – technically proficient, physically robust and the desire to become a better player every day.

“Callum has already played over 200 senior games, including reaching the Championship play-offs a year ago. I have had the opportunity to follow Callum’s career since watching him live on loan in Iceland in 2016 and again when he made his MK Dons debut against Norwich City in the Football League Trophy a few months later.

“He has sat at the top of Rovers’ transfer target list for right-sided players for the last 12 months and so as soon as we had Jon’s full backing, we had no hesitation in bringing Callum to the club. We would like to place on record our thanks to Barnsley for dealing with the transfer as professionally and efficiently as possible.”Download the LancsLive app for free on iPhone here and
