Bishop Dimieari Grammar School, St. Jude Girls win as Bayelsa clear laurels

It was an all Bayelsa State affair, yesterday, as Bishop Dimieari Grammar School and St. Jude Girls’ Secondary School won the boys and girls’ categories of the 2022 Nestle Milo Secondary School Basketball Championship, which ended at the Indoor Sports Hall o f the National Stadium, Surulere.

The boys’ category, which was highly competitive throughout the four quarters of the encounter, saw Bishop Dimieari Grammar School beating Government Secondary School, Karu, Abuja by 36 points to 33 in a final won by a last minute three pointer by Okini Valour of Bishop Dimieari.

The throw pushed the Bayelsa boys to 36 points after both teams were tied on 33-33 in the last minute of the game.

The organisers of the tournament described the outstanding last minute three-pointer by Valour as the highlight of this year’s Nestle Milo Basketball Championship.

In the girls’ category, St Jude Girls had an easy ride over Akpur College, Benue State, beating them by 38 points to 14.

Speaking after the finals, Bishop Dimieari Grammar School Coach, Tony Nelson, attributed his team’s victory to hard work and the commitment of his wards to win no matter the odds.

“Before we left Bayelsa State, all basketball lovers in the state were in support of the team. ”

“The final game was tough, but we did all we could to contain the Abuja boys. Being focused and committed throughout the game gave us victory,” he said.

For his outstanding performance at the final of the encounter, Valour won the MVP award in the boys’ category, while Abigail Isaac of St Jude Girls Secondary School won in the girls’ category. Prizes, trophies and cash rewards were given to outstanding schools at the event.
