Birmingham City’s two most underwhelming signings from the last 5 years and why – Do you agree?
As with any club making a new signing, there is always an element of risk when you do a deal.
You can do as much due diligence as you like on a potential transfer target and as much research as you like but you will only really know how well they do when they’re with your club and involved in games.
They could look like the best deal of all time but if they come in and don’t fit the same mentality as your club or the system, it could lead to the player flopping.
At Birmingham, there have been plenty of deals done over the last five years and some pieces of business have been excellent and have worked well so far, whereas others have gone the other way.
Based on the amount of transfer dealings done by a Championship club like the Blues on a regular basis, there is bound to be some who slip through the net and end up underwhelming. Here then, are two signings who didn’t do as well as they would have like at St Andrew’s.
Dan Crowley
It’s not that the signing of Dan Crowley was disappointing or that he flopped – it’s more a frustration over his signing than anything.
Having played for the Arsenal reserve side and come up through the ranks at the Gunners, he looked like he possessed plenty of talent. Rather than be kept on and get a chance at the Emirates Stadium though, he ended up at Willem II before being brought in by Birmingham.
Based on his prior experience and potential, it looked like a solid deal for Birmingham. They were acquiring a player who looked like he could get better and better on a relatively cheap deal and at a good age.
