Birmingham City linked with deadline day deal for Newcastle United defender

Birmingham City have been linked with a loan move for Newcastle United’s Jamal Lewis.

Blues have been in touch with the Premier League outfit after the 24-year-old was knocked down the pecking order following the arrival of Matt Targett on loan from Aston Villa.

Sources in the North East expect the former Norwich City left back to go out on loan and Blues have tried to bring Lewis to St Andrew’s.

However, BirminghamLive has been told a move is unlikely to happen.

Lewis is claimed to have several suitors in the Championship and Newcastle won’t be short of offers for a player who won promotion with the Canaries in 2019.

He had a good season in the Premier League the following campaign and has spent the last couple at St James’ Park.

He has not played since December 16 because of a hamstring injury but it thought to be nearing a return - wherever he goes.

Blues are currently putting the finishing touches to Lee Bowyer’ s squad - and while the head coach played down the prospect of any more additions on Sunday, the club have spent transfer deadline day exploring opportunities and have still not given up hope of bringing in another player.

So far this window they have signed five, four loans and a permanent deal for Juninho Bacuna.

Deadline day has seen Blues send Ivan Sanchez on loan to Real Valladolid and Mitch Roberts to Carlisle United for the remainder of the season.
