Birmingham City fan pundit identifies 19-year-old as the club’s most improved player of the season

This article is part of Football League World’s ‘Terrace Talk’ series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Birmingham City have fallen away drastically after a very positive start to the season and in the absence of the points deductions suffered by Reading and Derby County, Lee Bowyer’s men would have been firmly in the relegation battle this term.

The Blues’ season has fizzled out with growing concerns around where the club will be competing next season.

In a difficult financial climate, Birmingham performed admirably in the January transfer window, bringing in a handful of additions that have directly contributed to the club steering clear of the relegation conversation in the months that have followed.

Some younger players have masked the club’s downfall in recent years and FLW’s Birmingham City fan pundit Tom Oxland named one precocious talent as his most improved player of the season.

Speaking to Football League World, Oxland said: “Most improved player at Blues this season has to be Blues youngster Nico Gordon.

“He made a handful of appearances before this season, where we didn’t really see much of him, they were mostly off the bench.

“The only time we saw him start was at Stoke away, two seasons ago, where we lost 3-0.

“This season I wasn’t expecting him to really break through, but he’s come back from injury, gone into the squad and looked like the best defender on the pitch.

“I’m really happy for Nico, he’s definitely improved a lot and if he played from the start, you never know, he could’ve been our player of the season.“
