Billy Sharp headbutt: Footage of Brian Clough brutally dealing with pitch invaders in 1989

Nottingham Forest booked their spot in the most lucrative game in England after beating Sheffield United in a dramatic Championship play-off semi-final.

After two legs of all-action, roller-coaster football, the tie went down to the lottery of a shootout, with Brice Samba proving to be the trump card in goal for Forest.

It was an incredible moment for the fans of one of England’s true footballing institutions as their long-standing dream of returning to the Premier League came another step closer.

There were, however, ugly scenes in the aftermath as fans invaded the pitch to celebrate the joyous moment.

While the vast majority of fans were well behaved and simply there to soak up the historic moment, there were some who very much let themselves, and their club, down.

Billy Sharp was involved in an awful, unprovoked incident as a fan despicably charged and head-butted him before blurring back into the masses.

It was a disgusting act that could have brought serious harm to Sharp and we can only hope the villainous culprit is found and justly dealt with.

The incident however, did provoke memories of previous pitch invasions of a similar ilk, leading fans on a march down memory lane.

One famous moment from 1989, including the one and only Brian Clough, went viral on Twitter with footage of the famous gaffer having many a swing at his very own fans who were misbehaving on the pitch.

Following a League Cup quarter-final win over Derby, the Forest faithful flooded onto the pitch at the City Ground, much to the displeasure of a fuming Clough.

You can see the footage in the clip below:
