Billy Sharp 'has written his perfect Sheffield United story' but isn't finished yet

Billy Sharp has shown this season that there are no signs of him slowing down as he remains Sheffield United’s most prolific goalscoring threat.

The 36-year-old should be well into the twilight of his career but he has himself admitted that is fitter and stronger than he ever has been previously.

In 27 league games this season, Sharp has scored nine goals and added six assists which makes him not only United’s top scorer but also the top provider at the club.

The eighth of those goals saw him become the Championship’s all-time leading goalscorer since the second tier was rebranded in 2005.

He followed that up with another goal in another Blades victory as his equaliser started the fightback which ultimately handed Paul Heckingbottom’s side their third consecutive win.

There aren’t many better players that the United boss could have at his disposal than Sharp who has shown his capability in the Championship time and time again.

Speaking to Mirror Sport about breaking the record, the Sheffield-born striker said: "It was good to get the record done, finally! It was talked about for a few weeks and what with all the games we had called off over Christmas it was disappointing, as I'd like to have got it before then.

"It was nice to get the goal, and even more so when it was a victory for us.

"I know there's a few people, and rightly so, that say [the record is] only since the Championship was made, but you can only score in the games you play in.

"To be recognised as scoring the most goals, it's a nice thing. I know there's a few still out there who aren't too far behind so I need to keep on my toes and keep scoring goals so that's what I'm trying to do for the next two or three years."
