Biggar Rugby Club girls reach national cup finals but agonisingly lose out
Biggar Rugby Club’s girls reached two Murrayfield finals last weekend, but both agonisingly lost out.
The Hartree Mill club’s under-16s lost 53-33 to their Cambuslang counterparts, before the under-18s were defeated 25-12 by Stirling County.
A Biggar Rugby Club spokesperson said: “Though defeated, there were some outstanding passages of play, both in attack and defence, with Biggar, in both games, having to show great determination to halt their opponents,.
“There was understandable disappointment in the Biggar camp, but as has been reiterated so often in the lead-up to the big day, the girls can be so proud of their efforts throughout the season to date.
“Not many teams get to the finals, and fewer still get the chance to play at Murrayfield, so they can all hold their heads high.
“Commiserations to all involved, but a massive ‘thank you’ for representing the club so positively.”
Cambuslang won the club’s first ever national final at Murrayfield, with a 53-33 win over Biggar to lift the under-16 girls Youth Cup.
A dominant six-try to one performance in the second half saw Cambuslang beat the holders in a hugely entertaining match that was a good advert for the girls’ game.
Biggar scored the opening try in the first two minutes through Emma Wylie, with winger Jenna Johnson converting, following good play by Sophie Mellanby.
The holders struck again four minutes later through full-back Neve Murray, with the try converted by Mellanby.
Cambuslang rallied and a tap penalty led to Gemma Gordon crossing, and Rose Scott added a second, reducing the deficit to 14-10.
Each side traded converted tries, with Biggar’s Murray and Cambuslang’s Scott both bagging their second of the game.
