Bernie Ecclestone, 91, writes off Ferrari's 2022: 'Errors are creeping in again'

Former Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone says despite a great early start to the Formula 1 season, Ferrari has reverted to their old habits, and he does not see them winning the 2022 championship.

The 91-year-old Ecclestone feels that Red Bull driver Max Verstappen is cruising to his second consecutive drivers' world championship. Plus, despite always believing that a competitive Ferrari team is crucial to F1's success, he does not see them being a threat this season due to the same old mistakes creeping in.

Ecclestone, who had run F1 for decades until five years ago when Liberty Media took over, tells Swiss newspaper Blick, "Errors are creeping in again.

"The reliability we are seeing is often reminiscent of the old days, and the drivers themselves are not always confident on the track. It means Max is having an 'easy time' in the Red Bull with six wins already."

Not worth betting on

Ecclestone admits he does not like what he sees going on currently with Ferrari, who last won the F1 constructors' championship in 2008.

"Like many people, I had hoped that Ferrari would succeed again after more than 14 years," Ecclestone said. "Unfortunately, I have to say that anyone who continues to put their money on Ferrari or (Charles) Leclerc will get nothing."

Ferrari started the season winning two of the first three races, but since the resurgence of Red Bull in the last few races, they have been overtaken in both the constructors' and drivers' standings.

Leclerc sits in third place, 49 points behind leader Verstappen and three points behind Red Bull's Sergio Perez. Ferrari is second on the constructors' standings, 76 points behind Red Bull.
