Bernd Leno could have left Arsenal in January

TalkSPORT reporter Alex Crook believes that Bernd Leno would have left Arsenal in January if Matt Turner was arriving before the summer.

The January window ended up being a quiet month for the Gunners, although they did bolster their goalkeeping department with the addition of the USA international.

What’s the latest news with Leno?

The German, who joined for £19.3m three-and-a-half years ago, has been number one throughout the majority of his Arsenal career, although his future has always looked in doubt from the moment Aaron Ramsdale arrived last summer.

Since Ramsdale broke into the team, Leno has made just four appearances, coming against AFC Wimbledon, Leeds, Sunderland and Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup and FA Cup, and hasn’t featured in the league since August.

Leno was heavily linked with a January move to Newcastle, and a deal made sense at one point when Arsenal were in talks to sign Turner, who’s been impressive for America in their recent World Cup qualifiers.

However, while the 27-year-old has agreed a £7.4m deal from New England Revolution, he won’t officially join up with the North London giants until the summer, meaning Leno will still be required to be Arsenal’s backup goalkeeper for the remainder of the campaign.

And Crook explained that Leno would have been granted a move away from the Emirates had Turner arrived last month.
