Bernard Jackman: Munster still need to work out their 'Plan B'

Bernard Jackman and Johne Murphy believe Munster are still lacking a "Plan B" in attack, after they were left frustrated in Saturday's Investec Champions Cup opener against Bayonne.

Graham Rowntree's side limped to a surprise 17-17 draw against the tournament debutants, whose size and power stifled Munster's attacking game, with the URC champions scoring just three points in the final hour of the contest.

On the attack front it's been a mixed season so far for Munster. When their game has clicked it's looked razor-sharp, most recently against the Glasgow Warriors when they ran in six tries in an all-action display at Musgrave Park, three of which came in the opening 15 minutes.

However, on other occasions this season their attack has failed to fire, with a litany of handling errors seeing them draw with Benetton earlier in the season, while their November defeat to Ulster in Belfast was another night where they were shut down.

The province were missing a handful of first choice forwards for Pool 3 game against Bayonne last week, and Jackman says that played a big part in their struggles to get the ball to the outside channels where their attack is at its most dangerous.

"It wasn't just errors," Jackman said of their performance in the RTÉ Rugby podcast.
