Berlin 2022: Marta Kostyuk highlights huge gap in men's and women's prize money

Tennis has been viewed as one of the leading sports when it comes to pay parity, with male and female players offered the same prize pots during Grand Slams.

But outside of the four main tournaments , a large gap remains between earnings for male and female players.

Two tournaments are currently being played in Germany, and Ukrainian tennis star Marta Kostyuk has highlighted the stark difference in prize money.

Berlin 2022, also known as the German Open, is a WTA 500 grass court competition. The event coincides with the Halle Open, an ATP 500 tournament.

Kostyuk posted a breakdown of the prize money available for both competitions on her Twitter and wrote: “Are we really that bad?”

In the images, it shows the Halle Open offers €399,170 (£341,676) to the winner, and €214,775 (£183,840) to the runner-up.

The German men’s tournament has upped its pot by a massive 61.88 percent from 2021, thanks to the return of fans in stadiums. The grand total of prize money available to be filtered down through the competition stages is €2,134,520 (£1.8m).

Kostyuk has compared this to the prize money available for women competing at the German Open, and the difference is staggering.
