Benni dedicates 'special' CAF win to daughter: 'She turned 17, a significant number for me!'

AmaZulu coach Benni McCarthy admitted his side's historic victory over ES Setif in the CAF Champions League was made all the more special because it occurred on the birthday of his first-born child.

Usuthu followed up on last week's 1-0 win over Guinean club Horoya at the Moses Mabhida - their first-ever victory in the competition's group stage - with a 1-0 victory over ES Setif on home soil.

Luvuyo Mamela netted the match-winner on the night, and the victory sees Amazulu strengthen their grip on second place in Group B behind leaders Raja Casablanca.

While Friday's win was undoubtedly a remarkable result for the club, it also held added meaning for McCarthy for personal reasons.

"It's a special win, but it's an incredibly special day for me because today was the day I had my first child ever," McCarthy told reporters.

"It's her birthday today, and she turned 17, which is a massive, massive significant number for me because my life changed when I was 17, and my daughter turned 17.

"So it's good, and I appreciate that, and I'll share the beautiful day just as I'm about to have now after today's game."

McCarthy was well-known for wearing the number 17 jersey for all his respective clubs that he played for, including Bafana Bafana, during his playing career.

Meanwhile, reflecting on his team's performance against ES Setif, the 44-year-old admitted to not being fully satisfied with the result.

He felt his team looked comfortable throughout the encounter and claimed they should have won "3-0 or 4-0".

"I think it was a very good game, first 20 minutes very one-sided, and that's why you don't see me with a bigger smile on my face," McCarthy continued.
