“Been there and done it” – Derby County fan pundit selects ideal candidate for club takeover

This article is part of Football League World’s ‘Terrace Talk’ series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

The Derby County saga could be about to come to an end in the near future thanks to the re-emergence of former owner Mel Morris.

Morris put the Rams into administration in September following financial difficulties and since then there has been lots of twists and turns in the search for a new individual to take charge of County.

According to Quantuma, the company in charge of choosing the party to take the club forward, legal claims from both Middlesbrough and Wycombe Wanderers were putting a block on any potential takeover from happening with buyers reluctant to commit to doing a deal.

However with Morris and Boro owner Steve Gibson coming to an agreement last weeks and a meeting with Wycombe is scheduled for the very near future by the administrators, with the latest update from Sky Sports stating that there is confidence that a preferred bidder will be named by the end of February.

There are seemingly three parties interested in purchasing Derby – investment firm Carlisle Capital, led by brothers Adam and Colin Binnie from the USA, a consortium led by former Rams chairman Andrew Appleby and also the ex-Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley.

And per FLW’s Derby County fan pundit Jason Straw of the Rams Review podcast, the preferred option would be Ashley – despite the fact that he had a very bad relationship with Magpies fans for the business he did when owner of the Tyneside club.

“I think it’s got to the point with most Rams fans where they want this takeover sorted – they want anybody in,” Straw said.
