Becky Lynch: Triple H pushed for character shift after heel run was like 'swimming upstream'

Becky Lynch has lifted the lid on Triple H’s call to change her character, and how he described her heel run as ‘swimming upstream’.

Becky, who is currently out with a shoulder injury, became one the biggest faces in the company following her heel turn on Charlotte Flair at SummerSlam 2018. 

The turn was meant to send Lynch down the heel route, but instead fans aligned with the Irish star, and she transitioned into ‘The Man’ – which send her popularity into overdrive. 

However, after a year-long break from the ring as she welcomed her first child into the world, Lynch returned to the company as a heel and began a lengthy programme with Bianca Belair. 

The move did garner some heat from the fans, but there were a large portion who still cheered for the 35-year-old. Her heel run came to end at SummerSlam in July, where she aligned herself with Belair following the return of Bayley and her new group. 

Talking on the Out of Character podcast, Lynch explained that the change in character was Triple H’s idea, suggesting that they were fighting a losing battle in getting fans to boo her heel gimmick. 

“I talked to Hunter [Triple H] a little bit before and he was like, ‘How do you feel about being a heel?’ I was like, ‘Honestly, it’s fun, I like it. I feel I’m maybe more naturally inclined to be a babyface, people like me better as a babyface. Clearly, I’m doing my job if they don’t like me.’ I’m just great, lads. I’m just great [laughs]. He goes, ‘I feel we’re swimming upstream keeping you as heel.’ ‘Yeah, I agree.’ Then the creative was laid out and I was like, ‘That sounds awesome, hell yeah, pop, pop, pop,’
