BBC commentator makes Goodison Park admission that Everton supporters will love - opinion

BBC Sport commentator Guy Mowbray was left in awe of the atmosphere at Goodison Park as Everton claimed a crucial victory over Chelsea on Sunday.

The 18th-placed Toffees stunned their third-placed visitors on home soil, with Richarlison’s 46th-minute goal enough to secure a win which moves the Merseysiders onto 32 points in the Premier League table. That leaves them just two points behind Burnley and Leeds United, with a game in hand on both teams.

Frank Lampard’s side have picked up 13 points since he took over in January, all of them at Goodison Park.

Mowbray, who was on commentary on the game for Match of the Day, was left awestruck by the atmosphere at Goodison Park, believing that it is an intangible factor that Everton could harness in their bid for Premier League survival.

He tweeted: “Lucky to experience football at all levels all over the world. Nowhere better than Goodison Park when it’s like that. If support were worth points…”

Everton fans will absolutely love this claim from Mowbray.

First and foremost, he is suggesting that the Goodison Park atmosphere can match, or even surpass, that of the top teams in the Premier League and Europe. That includes local rivals Liverpool, of course.

More than that, Mowbray’s comments also illustrate the value of the extra steps taken by Everton supporters on Sunday. Thousands of fans lined the streets to welcome the home team’s coach to the stadium, chanting and flying flags.

The Liverpool Echo‘s Joe Thomas called the scenes ‘electric‘ and marvelled at the ‘incredible show of unity and passion‘, noting that ‘the blue air fizzed and crackled with the noise of terrace chants and the burn of smoke bombs’.
