Bayern Munich goalkeeper Yann Sommer hints at Thomas Tuchel issue in Man City loss

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Yann Sommer suggested that the recent change in manager had a part to play in the club’s heavy 3-0 defeat by Manchester City in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie.

Thomas Tuchel was overseeing his first Champions League game as Bayern boss against the manager he beat in the 2021 final while at Chelsea. Tuchel replaced Julian Nagelsmann at the end of last month, having managed just three games before the trip to the Etihad.

Sommer joined the German champions from Borussia Monchengladbach in January upon the long-term absence of Manuel Neuer following his leg fracture while skiing in December. He made a number of good saves against City, keeping the score to a respectable total.

The 34-year–old also had some hairy moments too though, one of which saw Erling Haaland nearly ricochet the ball into the net upon closing him down in the first half.

But even though he survived that episode, the three goals he ultimately conceded from Rodri, Bernardo Silva and Haaland makes for a difficult up-hill task in the return leg in Munich.

Sommer believes the scoreline didn’t reflect the flow of the match, especially given Bayern has the lion’s share of possession with 56 per cent. However, the shot stopper hinted that the change in boss over the past few months may have had a factor in the deficit.

Speaking to beIN Sports, he said: “3-0 is too much, we had chances but we made too many mistakes. We’ll see in the second leg. We will have to come back with a lot of confidence.

“We had chances but we knew we had to be compact, defend well. We did well sometimes but in the end, 3-0 is too much. Things always change when you change
