‘Basics’ – Danny Murphy exposes Manchester United forward Jadon Sancho after ‘worrying’ Southampton draw

Danny Murphy said Manchester United’s work-rate against Southampton was ‘shambolic’ and singled out England international Jadon Sancho for criticism after the 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.

United’s inconsistent season continued on Saturday as the team dropped two points at home to Ralph Hasenhuttl’s Saints.

The Red Devils took the lead on 21 minutes through summer signing Sancho but Southampton, humiliated 9-0 on their previous visit to Old Trafford 12 months ago, equalised after half-time through Che Adams.

Southampton were on top for much of the second-half as United drew 1-1 for the third successive match in a row, following a deflating stalemate with Burnley and an embarrassing FA Cup exit at the hands of Middlesbrough.

Former England midfielder Murphy, analysing the game for BBC’s Match of the Day, called Manchester United’s work-rate ‘shambolic’ and the team’s tactical plans ‘poor’.

The ex-Premier League star also singled out Sancho for criticism, highlighting how his decision not to track back almost cost United a goal.

‘Their work-rate off the ball is shambolic. Their tactical plans are poor,’ Murphy said.

‘Look at the top of your screen, [Kyle] Walker-Peters flies forward and look at [Jadon] Sancho… Not bothered, not going to chase him, not going to track back, I’ll leave him free on the back-post and Southampton should be 1-0 up.

‘That happened time and time again. It’s basics and you just can’t do it.’

Murphy added: ‘The worrying thing is Manchester United keep getting worse. They’re not getting better.’

United’s draw sees them stay fifth in the Premier League as they miss the chance to move back into the top-four, while Southampton remain 10th.
