Barry Ferguson in Celtic confession over Kieran Tierney as Rangers icon insists transfer return is 'too rich'

Kieran Tierney's return to Celtic would be too rich for the Parkhead club should they attempt to lure their former star away from Arsenal.

The 26-year-old left Glasgow in 2019 for a whopping £25million fee and faced the bittersweet transition from boyhood club to the English Premier League. It was Brendan Rodgers who oversaw the defender's move to North London, but Tierney now finds himself in a transfer conundrum with his role in Mikel Arteta's side seemingly diminishing. The likes of Saudi-backed Newcastle United and Aston Villa are said to be keen on his signature, but reports suggested the Scot would be open to a stunning Glasgow return.

Yet Record Sport columnist Barry Ferguson reckons the Scottish champions would be priced out of a move for their former star due to his high wage packet in English capital. The Rangers hero believes some of the big movers and shakers in the Premier League will be able to offer the left-back a more lucrative option, but revealed his surprise at being frozen out by the Gunners.

He told Go Radio: "Honestly, I can't see it happening. Just for the simple fact in terms of the fee if they're going to sign him. I know it could be a loan - but it's his salary. He'll be on an absolute fortune at Arsenal.

"I don't think it will happen. Kieran Tierney, if he becomes available on the open market, I think there will be plenty of Premier League teams desperate to take him. We've spoken about him a number of times and I think he's an exceptional player, he's done well at Arsenal and I was very surprised that he's not played more than he did last season.

"It would be a brilliant signing for Celtic, no doubt about. I think it would be a bit too rich for them...but you never know."
