Barcelona president tells Manchester United they have 'no intention' of selling Frenkie de Jong

Manchester United have been dealt a major blow in their pursuit of Frenkie de Jong, with Barcelona president Joan Laporta claiming they have “no intention” of selling the midfielder.

As reported by the Manchester Evening News , United were hoping to wrap up a deal for De Jong over the coming days as the Netherlands international returned from his break. A fee was agreed with Barcelona earlier this week, with United set to pay €65m (£56.14m) plus add-ons.

Spanish sources also indicated De Jong had accepted he would have to leave Camp Nou as the La Liga giants prepare for his departure. Laporta was said to be waiting for the transfer to go through before sanctioning any incomings in the market.

However, Barcelona now look to have made a U-turn on the proposed deal. Laporta has said he will do ‘everything in his power’ as the Catalan giants look to keep hold of the 25-year-old.

"There are clubs that want him, not just Manchester United. We have no intention of selling him, he wants to stay," Laporta said.

"Frenkie is considered as one of the best midfielders in the world by all the experts. We are happy to have him.

"I'm going to do everything I can in my power so that Frenkie stays here, but there’s also a salary issue and that would have to be adjusted."

De Jong has been United’s main target throughout the summer, with much of their efforts being focused on securing his services. Erik ten Hag had identified him as an ideal target as he looks to improve his midfield options.
