Barcelona 'need' Frenkie de Jong to join Manchester United and more transfer rumours

Barcelona 'need' Frenkie de Jong to join Manchester United to aid their financial troubles, new reports state.

According to the Independent, De Jong has been told that he needs to leave the La Liga club as they look to free up money from their wage bill. The report claims that Barcelona have made an offer to the Dutch midfielder to try and repay the €17m (£14.4m) the player is owed in deferred wages.

It is believed that the initial offer to De Jong would still leave him more than €10m out of pocket and that this negotiation could be the last stumbling block for the potential deal. Barcelona are desperate to try and resolve the matter with the player, which would enable him to make the move to United.

Elsewhere, Napoli's Victor Osimhen has personally dismissed speculation linking him with a move to United this transfer window.

According to Corriere dello Sport (via the Mail Online), the 23-year-old striker has distanced himself from recent reports, saying "they are just rumours of the market". The news comes after Erik ten Hag has publicly called for United to bolster their attacking options ahead of the September 1 deadline.

The United manager has said that it is "vital" to strengthen their squad due to the congested Premier League fixture list but the club can now seemingly cross Osimhen off their transfer list, although he's never been a priority target in any case.

With less than two weeks until the start of the season and more than a month to go until window closes, Ten Hag's side need to get their transfer business concluded as swiftly as possible.
