Bafana star Zwane’s World Cup dream may be over after three-match FIFA ban

Themba Zwane’s FIFA World Cup may have ended before it properly began.

The Bafana Bafana midfielder has been slapped with a three-match ban following the red card he received in the 2-0 loss to co-hosts Mexico in the opening match of the 2026 World Cup at Azteca Stadium at Mexico City on 11 June.

Zwane was given his marching orders following the intervention of the video assistant referee (VAR), which picked up his indiscretion that had been missed by the referee.

The red card Zwane received during the game would have seen him miss only the Czechia match.

Bafana play the Central Europeans in their second group game in Atlanta on Thursday.
