The South Africans made history by advancing to the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup for the first time as the men’s senior national team, following their 1-0 win over South Korea on Thursday (SA time) at the Monterrey Stadium.

It was a do-or-die showdown and the task was clear: three points or nothing.

A Thapelo Maseko goal in the 62nd minute ensured Bafana walked away with the three points to finish second in Group A with four points.

The Bafana skipper was everything his team needed throughout the match. He was a calm figure at the start of the match, offered stability when they were in control of the game, and commanded his area when they were under siege. He kept his first clean sheet of the tournament.

It was a classic Khuliso Mudau performance. He showed why he is regarded as the best right-back in Africa. His defensive strengths limited threats on the right side; he won his duels and made impressive tackles.
