Bafana Bafana’s B-team beats Egypt to continue 100% winning start under Pitso Mosimane
Bafana Bafana continued their 100% winning start under coach Pitso Mosimane when they claimed the scalp of Africa’s most decorated team, Egypt, at Cairo International Stadium on Sunday.
Mosimane’s men handed Egypt a 1-0 defeat in their slaughterhouse, making it three wins out of three under the manager who is back for a second stint at Bafana.
The 2-1 win over Guinea showed the team’s resilience and character, while the 5-0 drubbing of Eritrea showed their ruthless side.
The victory over Egypt, with a second-string team, showed the continent that Bafana are a team on the up - with the South Africans celebrating moving 49th in the FIFA rankings with a big win.
Mosimane was greeted by warm applause when he swaggered onto the pitch, and was swarmed by journalists when he left it after breaking Egyptian hearts. His success with Al-Ahly makes Mosimane a cult figure in these parts.
President Cyril Ramaphosa was even in attendance with Bafana’s biggest test so far, coinciding with the head of state’s trip to Egypt. Ramaphosa looked to only really recognise Ronwen Williams when he greeted the players in the change room.
The president would have recognised none of the players in the starting XI as Mosimane made nine changes to the Bafana team that beat Eritrea four days ago in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations’ (Afcon) qualifiers.
President @CyrilRamaphosa wishes @BafanaBafana well ahead of their friendly match against Egypt at the Cairo International Stadium.#BafanaPride ⚽️ #SAinEgypt
