Badly Drawn Boy says he was 'mistaken for a drug dealer' in Chorlton

His music has won an army of fans across the world, and Mercury Music Prize winner Badly Drawn Boy has one of the most distinctive images in the music world. But that didn't stop the Greater Manchester music icon getting mistaken for someone entirely different when back on his home turf at the weekend.

For the music star, aka Damon Gough, revealed to fans on social media a rather unfortunate case of mistaken identity when he visited a McDonald's in Chorlton. When a man approached his car he thought it was because he was a fan - but it was actually because he 'thought [he] was a drug dealer'.

The musician, known for wearing a woolly beanie, shared a photo of his dining location on Sunday night. He added a tongue-in-cheek message about the 'beautiful location' from the outdoor seats at McDonald's looking out across the busy Barlow Moor Road in the suburb.

In the tweet he said: "Just had my tea at this beautiful location. Sometimes it’s easy to forget what’s on your doorstep.

He added: "Got back in my car, sat listening to the radio for a few minutes... some guy knocks on my window. I thought he’d recognised me, turns out he thought I was a drug dealer."

Followers saw the funny side and swiftly racked up the likes for the tweet. One said: "Maybe it was the hat you were wearing." Another hailed him 'Dodgy Drawn Boy'.

Bolton-born Damon, 52, first found fame back in 2000 with his debut album The Hour of Bewilderbeast winning rave reviews, and the Mercury Music Prize the same year. His most recent album was Banana Skin Shoes released in 2020.
