Award-winning sitcom Alma's Not Normal gets second series

Award-winning BBC sitcom Alma's Not Normal is set to return for a second series. The show, which is set in Bolton, is the brainchild of the borough's very own Sophie Willan, who also stars in and writes the programme.

Its pilot episode was met with critical acclaim, winning Willan a BAFTA for Best Comedy Writer. The first series then proved a huge hit with audiences and was recognised by a further four national awards and has been nominated for three more BAFTAs this year.

The sitcom follows Boltonian wild-child and aspiring actress Alma Nuthall (Willan) as she bounces from job to job and tries to make her life as 'fabulous' as possible. It also stars Siobhan Finneran has her mum Lin and Lorraine Ashbourne as Alma's grandma Joan.

BBC confirmed that the show has now been commissioned for a second series, which will air on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer. Willan said: "I’ve been overwhelmed by the response to the show – people seem to really love and relate to the Nuthalls which means a lot and to get the chance to continue that story is beyond what I could have hoped for.

To be recognised by BAFTA, Broadcast Awards, The Royal Television Society, peers and our audience in such a way is a real honour. I’m thrilled to get back in the writing room to see where Alma’s journey takes us next.”

The show is produced by Expectation Entertainment. Nerys Evans, executive producer and Expectation’s creative director added: “Sophie Willan is one of the most naturally gifted comedy writers I’ve had the pleasure of working with.
