Austrian FA denies approaching Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick for national team job

The Austrian Football Association, the OFB, has denied approaching Ralf Rangnick with the proposition of becoming the country's next national team manager.

Kurier Sport reported on Wednesday morning that the OFB's sports director Peter Schottel met with the Manchester United interim manager on Monday to discuss the possibility of him taking up the role. However, the federation has moved quickly to deny the story.

A statement posted on Twitter said: “Clarification: There was no meeting between OFB sports director Peter Schottel and Ralf Rangnick, coach of @ManUtd.”

Austria are on the hunt for a new manager after Franco Foda was relieved of his duties following their World Cup play-off semi-final defeat to a Gareth Bale-inspired Wales in the previous international break. Rangnick has experience in Austrian football after previously working as director of football for Red Bull Salzburg.

Rangnick joined United in December on an interim basis until the end of the season following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Though the German has struggled to turn the club's fortunes around and they now sit seventh in the Premier League table after winning just three of their last eight outings. As a result, qualification for next season's Champions League is looking doubtful.

However, once his time in temporary charge comes to an end, Rangnick is set to move upstairs into a two-year consultancy role at Old Trafford. United have begun the process of finding their next manager, with Erik ten Hag and Mauricio Pochettino the leading candidates.
