Australian Open final halted as security detain intruder who stormed onto the court

Security had to act quickly when an intruder ran onto the court during the men’s Australian Open final.

Rafael Nadal and Daniil Medvedev are currently battling it out for the first Grand Slam of the year on a packed Rod Laver Arena on the final day of the tournament.

The Spaniard is seeking a record 21st career Grand Slam while Medvedev is hoping to follow up his US Open win last year with another trophy.

The world No.2 had taken the first set and was battling to regain control in the second set when the match had to be briefly halted.

A fan managed to get onto the court while Nadal was break point down in the ninth game of the second set and serving to hold as security quickly detained the culprit.

They could be seen being dragged off the court by security as the crowd booed and jeered their actions.

Pictures show the intruder who ran onto the court was also carrying a banner which read ‘abolish refugee detention.’

This is not the first time protesters have made their voices known with many banners and posters carrying similar messages displayed outside the Park Hotel in Melbourne where Novak Djokovic was previously held during his detention.

While the world No.1, who was eventually deported on the eve of the tournament, awaited his appeal following a visa denial he was held at the detention hotel for several nights.

The incident shone a light on the plight of reportedly more than 30 refugees held there, some of them for years, who are still awaiting their fate.
