Australian Matt Graham misses Beijing Winter Olympics moguls final after 2018 silver

After the sheer “elation” of reaching of podium four years ago, Matt Graham has described missing the moguls final at the Beijing Winter Olympics as his “biggest down” and more painful than his broken collarbone.

The Australian was looking for his second Olympic medal after a silver in PyeongChang four years ago, but was left in tears after he failed to make the finals at the Zhangjiakou course on Saturday night.

The 27-year-old needed one of his best runs to advance to the final after bombing his first qualification run on Thursday night, but instead had one of his worst.

“It’s tough,” a tearful Graham told Channel 7.

“It hurts a hell of a lot more than the collarbone did, not gonna lie. I put in so much work over the last however-many years.

“I just wish I could have done better than this ... I think this is my biggest down I’ve ever felt.

“I’m feeling a bit embarrassed. I’m so much better than that.

“From four years ago and having such elation and such satisfaction after that result, I really wanted to chase that dream again tonight.”

Graham had an interrupted build-up to Beijing, breaking his collarbone during a World Cup in Sweden in December and returning home to Australia after surgery to recuperate.

But he refused the blame the injury for his performance.

“Obviously it wasn’t the best lead-up, but I knew with my entry and how I was skiing here, I had a lot to give tonight,” he said.

“Obviously not doing well a couple of nights ago put a bit more of pressure on tonight. But I felt like I was handling it really well.
