Australian bronze medallist Tess Coady’s Winter Olympics injury secret stuns Channel 7 hosts

Australian snowboarder Tess Coady has revealed the staggering extent of an ankle injury suffered before winning bronze at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

The 21-year-old made it all the way to the podium in her long-awaited Olympic debut despite suffering a fractured ankle two days before the final.

Coady had previously only revealed she was sore following a fall off a jump in practice.

The injury scare threatened to bring her Winter Olympic dream crashing down for a second time.

Coady was ruled out of the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics when she suffered an untimely ACL injury right before her event.

This time she defied the pain, with the support of the Australian medical team.

Coady shared the revelation on Channel 7, leaving presenters Matt Shirvington and Emma Freedman stunned.

“I ended up fracturing it a little bit, a little one, a tiny fracture,” Coady said.

Shirvington replied: “Sorry, sorry, you won a bronze medal with a broken ankle?”

The young athlete played down the concern, saying “nah, it wasn’t broken” but Shirvington made sure her effort couldn’t be brushed aside.

“A fracture is a break!” the Olympic runner said.

Coady went on to praise the support she’d received from within the Australian camp.

“No, seriously, that was all the Australian medical team - they went to the end of the earth to help get me all good for finals,” she said.
