Attempted murder probe after boy, 19, pinned to the floor and knifed in front of horrified onlookers

Police have launched an attempted murder investigation after a 19-year-old boy was pinned to the floor and knifed in front of horrified onlookers.

Police and paramedics, along with an air ambulance, were scrambled to the scene to reports of a stabbing near to Wigan bus station on Thursday afternoon (July 18).

Video footage of the horror incident, shared across social media, appeared to show the 19-year-old victim lying defenceless on the floor as a man stood over him and stabbed him.

Greater Manchester Police have confirmed they are aware of the footage and have since arrested two men, aged 30 and 19, on suspicion of attempted murder. The victim, aged 19, was rushed to hospital. His injuries are not described as life-threatening.

A number of police vehicles blocked the main road as an air ambulance was seen landing nearby following the incident. Roads surrounding the market were also closed.

The incident sparked outrage on social media, as one person posted: "What is this world coming to!!" and another wrote: "What is happening for crying out loud. No-one is safe anymore."

Wigan MP Lisa Nandy also issued a statement after the violent incident, posting to X: "Following the very serious incident that took place in the town centre earlier today, I have been in touch with Greater Manchester Police. They immediately responded to the incident and have made several arrests.

"They are also keen to reassure people in Wigan that there are no wider risks to the public. I would ask people to avoid speculation and to contact Greater Manchester Police if they have any information at all that may help the investigation.
