Atletico Madrid lose key man for Man City Champions League clash as Bernardo Silva makes promise

City have been handed a boost ahead of their Champions League quarter-final first leg with Atletico Madrid on Tuesday. The Spanish side have revealed that defender Jose Maria Gimenez will miss the game through injury.

The centre-back was taken off during the second-half of his side's win over Alaves in La Liga on Saturday. Atletico confirmed their worst fears on Monday when announcing their 22-man squad.

It’s not certain whether the Uruguayan will be ready in time for the return leg in Spain. Atletico released a statement explaining Gimenez’s absence.

Midfielder Bernardo Silva has admitted that there is pressure on his team going into the tie with Atletico. However, he promised that the team would give their all to reach the final once again.

City suffered an excruciating loss to Chelsea in last year’s Champions League final and Bernardo made it clear that they will try to make amends this time. “It's where the best clubs in Europe play. We really want to do it,” he said.

“We weren't able to do it in the past years. The best we can do is try harder and harder and this year we're going to try very hard.”
