Athletics: Scottish Under-17 Championships 200m record falls as Dean Paterson storms to gold in Aberdeen

Athlete Dean Patterson twice broke a Scottish Under-17 Championship record on his way to winning two gold medals in Aberdeen last weekend.

The 16-year-old from Ashgill set a new 200m record of 21.73 in his heat, then broke that on Sunday in the final by running 21.41.

That added to a 100m gold he won on Saturday, in a time of 10.79, at the Chris Anderson Stadium during the 4J Senior and U17 Championships.

Mum Eileen reckons Glasgow School of Sport student Dean could have recorded an even better time.

She explained: “The 200m run was a Scottish Championship record and he’s well happy with that.

“He’s buzzing, especially when he comes away with a good time, but he can also walk away with a gold and not always be pleased with his time.

“But there are other things to take into account, including head-wind.

“He did that at Aberdeen on Sunday, and although it was 21.41, he was running into a head-wind, so who knows what it could have been!

“There’s plenty more scope there for him to keep bettering his time, and that’s all Dean looks for when he goes out there, it’s to keep improving.”

Patterson barely had time to recover from that before heading down to Wales to run for Scotland in the Welsh Athletics Under-20 International this week.

He then heads to the England Athletics Under-15 and 17 Championships in Bedford next weekend, before taking part in the School Games National Finals at Loughborough University from September 1-4.

Eileen said: "Next weekend at the English Championships he’s probably only going to do the 200m, maybe not the 100, as it’s not his strongest and he just likes to concentrate on the 200.”

Eileen is a bit concerned that Dean hasn’t had time off, but hopes to jet off on a holiday once the season is over.
