Aston Villa could 'miss out' on 'genius' Gerrard replacement at Villa Park

Aston Villa’s owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens risk missing out on Mauricio Pochettino if they continue to back Steven Gerrard as manager at Villa Park, according to journalist Dean Jones.

NSWE handed the Liverpool legend more than £60 million to help bolster his first-team squad during the summer transfer window but an even bigger change could soon be in the offing at the club.

The 50-year-old was sacked as Paris Saint-Germain manager in July after 18 months in charge, despite securing the Ligue 1 title months earlier.

But Pochettino – who has previously been described as a ‘genius’ – is unlikely to remain unemployed for long.

According to Football Insider, Villa are considering him as a replacement for Gerrard should the club continue to struggle, with Unai Emery also lined up.

The same outlet suggests that Pochettino would be open to joining the Villa Park project and is not set on continuing to take charge of a Champions League side.

However, they are unlikely to be alone in their pursuit. It is understood that West Ham have ‘tested the waters’ regarding a move for Pochettino after a tough start to the season.

Jones believes that, if Sawiris and Edens do not act soon, they could miss out on the chance to land one of the game’s best managers.

The journalist adds that, given his track record, Pochettino is unlikely to be out of the game for long.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “I doubt Pochettino is still going to be available by the end of the season and if you leave this decision too long, it might be that you miss out on the opportunity to get one of the best managers in the game.”
