Aston Villa: £9m target 'definitely one to watch' at Villa Park

Aston Villa are one of several clubs ‘looking at’ Anderlecht defender Sergio Gomez this summer, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The highly-rated 21-year-old is believed to be on Villa’s radar following an outstanding 2021/22 campaign for the Jupiler Pro League giants.

A report from The Athletic at the start of June stated that the Midlands outfit had ‘monitored’ Gomez as they assessed their options ahead of the current transfer window.

It’s claimed that the Spain Under-21 international, who is valued at £9m by Transfermarkt, is viewed as a cheaper alternative to Villa’s other targets.

Aaron Hickey, who is now destined for Brentford, and Rangers’ Calvin Bassey were viewed as being too expensive for players who were likely to play second-fiddle to Lucas Digne.

However, with Matt Targett joining Newcastle United on a permanent basis following a successful loan spell, signing a backup left-back is on Steven Gerrard’s to-do list.

Villa have already been active in the market this summer, signing Philippe Coutinho, Diego Carlos, Boubacar Kamara and Robin Olson.

And Jones has informed GiveMeSport that Gomez is ‘definitely one to keep an eye on’ in what remains of the window.

He told GMS: “Sergio Gomez was a player that actually had a lot of clubs looking at him at the backend of last season coming into the summer window. So, Villa are one of those.

“I don’t know how much progress has been made to this point, but he’s definitely one to keep an eye on.”

Gomez rose through the Barcelona youth academy before joining German giants Borussia Dortmund in 2018 in search of regular first-team opportunities.

The 5 foot 7 ace was sent on a two-year loan to La Liga
