Asian Cup live updates: Matildas face 2018 foes Thailand in final group match

The Matildas secured their spot in the quarter-finals of the Asian Cup with their 4-0 defeat of the Philippines on Monday.

But tonight's re-match against old foes Thailand, who pushed Australia all the way to penalties in the 2018 semi-final, will determine which knock-out bracket the Matildas will fall into, with a potential clash against heavyweights South Korea or Japan on the horizon.

สวัสดี (sawasdee) and welcome to the ABC's live coverage of the Matildas' third and final group-stage match of the Asian Cup!

My name is Samantha Lewis and I'll be your bleary-eyed guide as Australia take on 2018 semi-final foes Thailand to determine which nation they'll face in Sunday night's quarter-final.

The Matildas' first two wins against Indonesia and the Philippines have guaranteed them a top-two finish in Group B, and with a staggering goal difference of +22, it's all but certain they will go through as group leaders, barring some miraculous display from Thailand.

As per the permutations, the winner of Group B will face the runner-up of Group C, and after tonight's earlier 1-1 draw between reigning champions Japan and South Korea, it'll be the Koreans who Australia will almost certainly face in the first knock-out stage.

Speaking of earlier happenings, it's been a chaotic 12 hours for Australia, with confirmation this morning that midfielder Tameka Yallop tested positive for COVID-19.
