Arsene Wenger backs Arsenal to keep pace with Man City after their Manchester United demolition

Arsene Wenger believes Arsenal are the second-best team in the Premier League behind Manchester City and insists Mikel Arteta’s side are capable of challenging for the title.

Arsenal news, exclusives and analysis

The Gunners lead the way in the Premier League following their 3-1 victory over Tottenham on Saturday.

But City are just a point behind after they ran out 6-3 winners over Manchester United on Sunday with Erling Haaland and Phil Foden both scoring hat-tricks.

Pep Guardiola’s side are heavy favourites to win the Premier League this season but Wenger is confident his former club can run City close in the second half of the season.

Wenger also feels Liverpool and Chelsea lack the consistency to pose a significant threat.

Asked if he believes Arsenal should be considered as Premier League title challengers, Wenger told beIN Sports: ‘Yeah, personally I would put them just behind City.

‘[Arsenal are] the second-best team to have a good chance to win the Premier League because Man City at some stage will focus highly on the Champions League.’

Asked if he felt it’s Arsenal’s best chance to challenger, Wenger said: ‘I think so.

‘And after we don’t know about Liverpool but they are already 11 points behind and 10 points behind Man City is a mountain to climb.

‘And Chelsea as well do not look consistent at the moment. They have not found the confidence to contend to win the league.

‘Tottenham, anyway, by my DNA I cannot give you [a prediction].’
