Arsenal urged to sign Rangers ‘baller’ with incredible goalscoring record – ‘why not?’

A former Arsenal player has told the Gunners to raid Rangers for captain James Tavernier, who has an incredible goalscoring record north of the border.

Tavernier came through the Newcastle United academy before going on several loan spells. After making just 10 senior appearances for the Magpies, the right-back was sold to Wigan in 2014 for £90,000.

A loan spell at Bristol City followed before Tavernier joined Rangers in 2015. And he has gone on to become a deadly player for the Scottish giants.

Under Steven Gerrard last season, the Bradford-born star hit 19 goals and 16 assists in 46 games in all competitions. That form helped Rangers win their first Scottish Premiership title in 10 years, going unbeaten in the process.

Admittedly, Tavernier is the Gers’ penalty taker. Nevertheless, he is a deadly player from wide areas who could take Arsenal to the next level.

Tavernier registered his 80th goal for Rangers in their 3-1 victory over Motherwell on Saturday. Reacting to the achievement, he tweeted: “80th goal for Rangers.

“Another great display of character to go 10 men down and bring back the three points.

“Thank you for your amazing support! Onto Thursday now.”

Sanchez Watt, who came through the ranks at Arsenal before making a few first-team appearances for the Gunners, reacted to that tweet.

He urged Mikel Arteta’s side to make a summer move for Tavernier, despite them already having the impressive Takehiro Tomiyasu at right-back.

“I’ve played with and against Tav – baller,” Watt said. “He would suit Arsenal’s style of play.

“Top professional on and off the pitch, never misses games. A captain who gets assists and can score goals.

“Set piece specialist, quick, gets up and down constantly, defends well. Why not?”
