Arsenal might 'consider letting' £18m star leave the Emirates

Arsenal might consider selling Granit Xhaka this summer if they can find an upgrade, according to Daily Star journalist Paul Brown.

Despite his troubles over the years, the £18m-rated midfielder emerged as a key player under Mikel Arteta last season.

Xhaka looked on course to leave for Roma last summer before a move to the Italian capital collapsed, and he not only stayed in London, but ended up signing a contract extension at the Emirates.

With Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang unavailable, he started the season as captain and despite getting himself sent off in the 5-0 defeat at Manchester City, which came before a ligament injury forced him to miss two months, he was a nailed on starter when fit.

He would end up playing 30 times in all competitions and despite recent doubts over his future, he said in an interview in April that he’s still 100 per cent committed to the Gunners.

But Arsenal are looking to make huge strides in the transfer window after missing out on Champions League football and Brown reckons that Xhaka could leave if they’re able to find a suitable replacement.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “At the moment, I don’t think there’s any serious interest in Xhaka that means he’s about to leave, and he certainly isn’t going anywhere until Arsenal have strengthened in that area of the pitch.

“He is actually still quite an important member of the squad in terms of what he gives them with his leadership in the dressing room, he’s a big voice, a big character in there, but on the pitch I think his influence has waned over the seasons, and can Arteta really trust him? He’s made mistakes in big games, so if Arsenal were able to upgrade, I think they would consider letting him go.”
