Arsenal hatch £50m Amadou Onana transfer plan as Manchester United stance clear

Mikel Arteta's Arsenal are believed to be weighing up a move for Everton midfielder Amadou Onana amid previous Manchester United links.

According to our colleagues at football.London, the Gunners are exploring the possibility of a deal in a bid to boost the defensive midfield position. The Toffees are believed to be expecting £50million to allow the 22-year-old to depart this winter but their current financial situation could hinder their hand.

Reports elsewhere suggest the interest is more concrete though and journalist Sacha Tavolieri understands 'intensive' talks have been undertaken between the two Premier League clubs. From a United perspective, this news of Arsenal interest could force their hand.

Back in the summer, Erik ten Hag's men were linked with a move for Onana as they attempted to solve the issues in central midfield. For some time, Ten Hag has been looking for a Frenkie de Jong-style player to add to his team but has been unable to get a deal done.

United are hamstrung in January by Financial Fair Play fears and the boardroom has already stressed the Reds are unlikely to be conducting any business this month, as it is not an 'opportune time' to do so. Ten Hag also has other priority positions to focus on. A centre-forward and defensive recruits probably take precedence over a midfielder at this stage, especially considering Kobbie Mainoo's rise to prominence in recent weeks.
