Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta sends classy Premier League title message to Man City

Mikel Arteta congratulated Manchester City on winning the Premier League title and regrets that Arsenal could not challenge until the final day of the season.

Pep Guardiola's side were crowned champions on Saturday night after Arsenal were beaten 1-0 by Nottingham Forest. The results secured the hosts safety in the Premier League whilst confirming City as title winners.

The Gunners have lost back-to-back league matches and run out of steam as the title race reached the run-in. Injuries and fatigue set in which meant Arteta was unable to keep his side at their pre-Christmas levels.

Arteta first congratulated his former side on their Premier League crown before reflecting on Arsenal's latest defeat. The Spaniard admitted he has regrets over the way their title bid has faltered.

"First of all congratulations to City for winning the championship and it is a really sad day for us after everything we have done in the season," Arteta said. "Now we have to face the reality and we gave a goal away, a huge chance away that we gave them, and couldn’t break them down.

"We’d have been here three hours and still we didn’t have enough to do that, so we have to face it, it is my responsibility and I have to take it.

"For sure [there is regret] because that’s what we wanted to do today, we wanted to do it last Sunday, but this is football and your opponent plays enough to score a goal and they defended well, and we were unable to break them down."
