Arrests at Euro 2024 in Berlin after trouble involving "mostly Polish" fans

FRANKFURT : Berlin police said on Friday they had made arrests after an altercation involving "mostly Polish" spectators near a fan zone for the European Championship soccer games in the German capital.

Poland were playing Austria in Group D on Friday in Berlin with the Austrians winning 3-1.

Police said their officers were called to the scene near the Brandenburg Gate when a skirmish occurred between the fans and the event's ushers, but police were then themselves pelted by the fans with bottles and stones.

"Our colleagues used physical force, pepper spray and batons and arrested multiple people," police said on the X social media platform.

A spokesperson said the situation was contained but that they could not yet provide the number of arrests or injured.

Injured police and fans were getting medical attention, they said.
